“The academic notion of an economically rational man must be refuted when confronted with volunteer soldiers in war zones. The idea that a person would allow themselves to be placed in a war zone for a small economic reward signifies that other incentives besides economics provides the motivation. Ideals, patriotism, prejudices, authority, violence, revenge, group dynamics, etc. defy economic reward, and provide little understood psychic rewards that motivate others to enter killing zones.”
